From Kdevelopedia.org Treasures: Korea & The World Skills Competitions

Απο τους θησαυρούς της www.Kdevelopedia.org

Η Κορέα και Η Συμμετοχή της στους Παγκόσμιους Διαγωνισμούς Δεξιοτήτων

One of the success factors of Korea’s Development miracle after Korea War was the focus in improving the Human Capital. The poor skills and inefficiencies of the vocational training were gradually transformed to high quality achievements thanks to Governments long term policies on vocational training, R&D, Information Technology, being part of the Economic Development Plans.

An indication of this transformation was the participation and the victories at the World Skills Competitions established from Spain in 1950, the biggest today vocational education and skills excellence event in the worldThe Competitors represent the best of their peers and are selected from skill competitions in WorldSkills Member countries. They are all under the age of 23 years (except for four skills that have the age limit of 25). They demonstrate technical abilities both individually and collectively to execute specific tasks for which they study and perform in their workplace.

Korea participated for the first time, in 1967 hosted in Spain and from 1973 started winning top positions. It is noteworthy that from 1977 to 1991 Korea maintained the first position in every competition. The Government supported actively the preparation and participation in Local and World Skills Competitions and the Winners were received with great pride being role models for youth.

Sharing Knowledge From www.kdevelopedia.org: Korea's Public Wholesale Market

The successful and very touching 2014 film "Ode to my Father " http://bit.ly/1Id1C2i

The successful Korean movie in 2014 “Gukje Market” (International Market in Busan city) or as foreigners know it “Ode to my Father”, showing the years after the Korean War, reveals the importance of local markets that have always been an important source of income for survival, transactions and cheap buying of food & other goods. However rural and local markets are more than this.

In 2013 Modularization of Korea’s Development Experience, the institution of Public Wholesale Market , its construction and management are being examined. Wholesale Market were considered the most ideal distributor among other distributors for agricultural products. By establishing Public Wholesale Market, its functions include large-scale collection and fast distribution of small-scale agricultural products intended for collecting individual, small-scale and distributed agricultural products in one
place and in a large scale to distribute them to buyers quickly, accurately and efficiently.
Agricultural products are produced in many sites across the country. This function enables
the wholesale markets to implement the rule of mass preparation and the rule of minimized
transactions, so that it is possible to reduce social distribution costs to establish efficient
distribution systems. A successful case is the opening in 1985 of the Garakdong Wholesale Market. More in www.kdevelopedia.org on Korea’s Knowledge Sharing Program on Public Wholesale Market Construction and Management http://bit.ly/1HJI1Bn

More treasures from K-Developedia; SHINSEGYE Department Store, Seoul, Korea : “Fifty-ONE DAY MARKETING STUDY”, September 13 to November 2, 1966

Shinsegye in Centum City Busan, the largest department store in the World http://bit.ly/1GbYqha and the The first and main building of Shinsegye Department Store in Jung-gu, Seoul http://bit.ly/1Gyar2E

SHINSEGAE Department Store is the largest and oldest retailer in Korea and the first to introduce the concept of the department store to Korea in the 1930. Today it is expanded in 10 departments stores around the country, while the store in Centum City in Busan holds the Guinness World Record as the World’s largest department store. Its previous name was “Donghwa Department Store” and adopted its current name in 1963. The 60’s was the Store’s a decade of transformation and expansion. It was not an easy road.
The front page of the “Fifty-ONE DAY MARKETING STUDY” http://bit.ly/1K2vTPV

In 1966 an American Marketing Researcher was invited by KPC(Korea Productivity Center) and together with the local Marketing KPC Staff contacted a “Fifty-ONE DAY MARKETING STUDY” to trace the reasons of  sales difficulties at the Store. At that time there was only one store (in Chungmuro 1ga, Jung-gu, Seoul) and its leased departments. The American Marketing Researcher after examining for 55 days every aspect of the department store(conducted surveys, met the management and staff, examined the advertising policies and visited all other competitor dep.stores), presented the above Marketing Study.
Among the issues defined were the difficulties of the customers to reach the department store (“this is alarming..” ), the inefficient operation of the leased departments, the advertising campaign that should be changed and focused on the radio and not on the newspapers, the exterior design, the lack of English signage for foreigners etc.

some of the main issues identified in the study

The whole of this historic marketing study can be be found and downloaded in K-Developedia resources database http://bit.ly/1K2vTPV  In its pages includes many treasures of how marketing policies were seen those years and the points identified.

A coincidence of not, at the same year a pedestrian overpass in front of the Shinsegae was inaugurated. Photo can be seen in K-Developedia http://bit.ly/1Cjkgxv

A Greek Start for Korea's Shipbuilding Industry Development: Hyundai Heavy Industries

From the www.kdevelopedia.org Treasures

Ελληνική Αρχή για την Ανάπτυξη της Ναυπηγικής Βιομηχανίας στην Κορέα - Hyundai Heavy Industries

Who knows that the first ever customer of the Hyundai Heavy Industries was the Greek Shipping Tycoon George S. Livanos back in 1972? And that thanks to his order of two oil tanker vessels, Ju-yung Chung, the founder of the Hyundai group, who started Korea’s modern shipbuilding industry was able to persuade London bankers to provide the capital needed for the construction of the shipyard in Ulsan?

The launching of the 260 thousand ton Atlantic Baron oil tanker manufactured by Hyundai Heavy Industries(1974). This is one of the first of the two tankers built at Huyndai shipyards. The L in front stands for LIVANOS.(Λ=Lamda) from K-Developedia http://bit.ly/1IcSSXQ

In the 1970s, the Korean government embarked on an ambitious industrial policy to promote Heavy and Chemical Industries, one of the main factors for its rapid economic development. One of the most important one is Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI). However back then it lacked the necessary capital to build the shipyard and could not acquire the needed trust from international brokers as until then Korea was not into the shipping industry.

Mr. Livanos in an interview said he entrusted Mr. Chung with the first order because he had been impressed by Mr. Chung’s strong attitude and sense of adventure.
Mr. Livanos noted that when he first met Mr. Chung, the Korean entrepreneur visited him with nothing more than a Korean currency note that featured a drawing of a Geobukseon, a 16th century battleship with a spiked steel roof that resembles the back of a turtle. Mr. Livanos said the Hyundai founder had asked for his trust, citing the fact that Korea had built the world’s first-ever iron-clad ship.
